Red Dead Redemption Machinima Short Film Review

Machinima has been a favorite form of online entertainment for years, but rarely does anyone from Hollywood notice or even get behind the wheel and make some of their own. That changed when Rockstar Games decided to make a short film to promote their newest release "Red Dead Redemption". Instead of creating a live action short, they decided to hand over their graphics engine to John Hillcoat, director of The Road and The Proposition. What he did was use all of the in-game characters to create a movie within the game world itself.

The machinima short film starts different from the game, but you get introduced to John Marston, a former gang member sent to kill the men he once called friends. He teams up with the sheriff of Armadillo and a few others to find John's former gang. The whole experience plays out like a cat-and-mouse game with bullets and gunpowder. Towards the end, John and Co. end up using the Trojan horse technique to gain access to a fort where is old posse is setting up shop (in which they storm the fort armed with a Gatling gun).

When it comes to machinima, this short film was created beautifully. The characters actions were in sync and some of the dialog was rerecorded to fill in certain segments. Some of the language was edited due to the fact that FOX was chosen to air the film on their network. Even though it wasn't created the same way as many videos posted on YouTube, John Hillcoat used nothing but what was in the game to make a 30 minute film that was worthy of being aired on TV.

As for the story of this machinima short film, it was missing a few pieces of info that may have confused or alienated some views who never played Red Dead Redemption. PlayStation 3 Slim Review - Is the PlayStation 3 Slim the Best Game Console?

The PlayStation 3 has been around for many years now, but now it has been slimmed down and revamped and certainly doesn't disappoint. First and foremost, the PS3 Slim is cheaper. It's also a third smaller and lighter than the hulking previous version, and a third more energy efficient, meaning slightly lower running costs and, more importantly, near silent operation as minimal fan work is required to keep it cool.

The Slim has gained a 120GB hard drive and exchanged the fingerprint magnet gloss finish for a matte one. The ugly font is gone to, replaced by a new, embossed PS3 logo on both top and bottom.

Furthermore, Sony has dropped the touch sensitive power and eject sensors, ending the frustration of waving your finger to no avail. Instead there are proper, old-fashioned buttons with an agreeably clicky action. The on/off switch on the back has also gone, so you'll need to switch it off at the socket.

There are some cool new ways of controlling the PS3 Slim. Plug it into a Bravia Link-capable Sony TV and you can navigate the PlayStation's media bar menu with the TV's remote, making it ideal for watching Blu-ray's. It even powers down the PlayStation when you switch the TV off.

If you are out and about, you can still get out all your PS3's movies, pictures and music using your PSP, but you'll also be able to access it from certain Sony Ericsson phones.

There is one major gripe with the new PS3. It won't play PS2 games, although some PSOne titles will work. There are also a litany of minor caveats. It only has two USB's, is no longer compatible with Linux, doesn't come with an HDMI cable and you'll have to shell out extra on a stand to make it sit upright. We doubt those are deal-breakers for anyone, but we thought you should know.

In all, though, the Slim is a big improvement, being cheaper, smaller, quieter and more efficient, with new features that further expand its appeal, both as a gaming and lifestyle device. As well as a killer back catalogue, forthcoming titles include Band Hero, FIFA 10, and Red Dead Redemption. A video store also arrives this year.

So, game over? Well, maybe not, given Microsoft has just slashed the price of an Xbox 360 elite. Even so, in this slimmed down, cut-price guise, Sony's PS3 has never looked more affordable or alluring.

For the quality of games available and the fact that it has a Blu-ray player built in, then yes, but the XBox 360 has a wider range of games and the Nintendo Wii is far more user involved. Get Red, Get Dead, Get Redemption

The plot of the game surrounds John Marston, a retired outlaw, is snatched from his wife and son by angry government agents who order him to kill former gang members he had previously worked with in his past. If he completes the task, he will be granted permission to return home. Thus, John goes forth and confronts Bill Williamson but is shot almost immediately. The head of MacFarlane Ranch, Bonnie, finds him wounded and gets him treatment.

Throughout the game, John must fulfill his promise by capturing various thugs and previous gang members, however, somewhere along the line, he is swayed and joins the side of a rebel group who are rivals against his previous gang. Much like the government, the head of this new group will not allow John to go home till he has killed the previous leader of his old gang, Dutch. Much of the game involves John hunting Dutch, who always manages to escape until finally Dutch kills himself by jumping off a cliff.

Finally, John is allowed to go home to his wife and son, but a vengeful attack causes devastation in their home and John is killed. The game ends years later with an angry, bitter, and vengeful Jack standing in front of his father's grave.

Red Dead Redemption allows players to play in a large, open-world environment. You can walk, kill, shoot, run, and interact with the environment. Because of this environment players have the chance to really create their own adventure and choose how they want to play the game. The storyline will progress depending on what decision you make the time for tasks to be completed will also hinge on the places you go and the things you decide to take on. Aside from the main storyline of the game, you can also take part in different Western style events that will allow you to experience the wild wild West in a way never before done. You can attend public hangings, witness ambushes, and see or experience dangerous and life threatening animal attacks. You can also partake in gambling and hunting animals for meat and hide.

For points, Red Dead Redemption, uses a morality system where you can gain positive or negative honor points depending on what you decide to do. If you decide not to kill an outlaw, you will get positive honor. Contrastingly, if you kill someone that is innocent or perform various crimes, you will get negative honor. This system works in conjunction with the fame system, in which people will treat you differently in the game depending on your moral honor status.

If you have a thrill for weapons to use on non-real people, then this is the game for you. Gunfights are plentiful in the game, and allow you to take cover, target someone, blind fire, and then shoot with free aim. You can also shoot legs or arms to get people down but not dead. Red Dead Redemption Sex Scene Insulting to Mature Gamers

There are those who will claim that anyone who doesn't like sex in video games such as this one should just "not buy the game" and avoid "ruining the fun for others". These are the exact types of comments that come from an immature gamer.

Sex and nudity, gore and excessive violent content do not make a game "mature" and the M for Mature rating itself is just a label to allow developers to slip this controversial content in whenever they can to draw more attention to their titles.

Rockstar has a reputation for putting nudity and sex in their games so it's no surprise really that Red Dead Redemption would have such a scene. They proved in their Grand Theft Auto series that they like to push the boundaries of what is allowable and acceptable. Due to some heated debate over the "Hot Coffee" mini game scandal, Rockstar has kept to mostly implied sex scenes and sexuality. But in Red Dead Redemption, they decide to take it a step further and introduce sex in their games in a new way. If controversy is what they're after, then they've certainly done the trick!

The famous Red Dead Redemption sex scene happens at the beginning of "The Gates of El Presidio" mission. John walks in to find Abraham Reyes (well known for consorting of women of all types) in what some would call a compromising position with a local woman on a table. This is where the problem comes in. It's quite apparent to any mature adult that game developers could easily imply what was taking place on the table without the need for nudity or graphic sex scenes. Yet Rockstar feels we need full-on cartoon porn to get the picture.

It's a real insult to mature gamers when developers think we need to have this type of blatant pornographic scene thrown in that has no real bearings on the mission or outcome of the game in any way. It's an attention-seeking ploy that wouldn't be needed if they just made great games in the first place. It's not so much the nudity and sex itself that bothers most gamers as it is the tricky tactic that is often used to get the game in the press.

The only people interested in the potential pixilated porn would be children or other immature audiences. For the rest of us, we get what the storyline is telling us about Reyes and his ruff n' gruff attitude and objectification of women. We understand that he relishes in his celebrity status and taking advantage of that to its fullest extent. There's no need for the scene at all other than to draw controversial attention to a subpar game. If more time was spent improving the story line and game play, Red Dead Redemption wouldn't need a sex scene to get people talking about it.

So what is the scene all about anyway?

The basic, clean version is that at the start of mission, John walks into a room where Reyes has a local woman on a table and is obviously having sexual intercourse with her. The woman is clothed but the clothes are pulled away to reveal the private areas. We see breasts and the sounds and animations of intercourse but we do not see male or female genitalia. The woman, startled, then jumps up from the table and begins to walk towards camera view where we get a full female frontal. Her dress is pulled away at the genitals and at the breasts.

I can not wait to buy my copy of Red Dead Redemption; it is going to be the best game out there! It comes out May 18th, 2010. Red Dead Redemption is for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The follow up game to the 2004 hit Red Dead Revolver that was for the PS2. Players will take on great adventures across the American frontier as former outlaw John Marston.

Red Dead Redemption features an epic open-world environment for players to explore, just like Grand Theft Auto series, except this is the Wild West! For example, there will be frontier towns, rolling prairies teaming with wildlife, and perilous mountain passes - each packed with an endless flow of varied distractions. You can hunt wildlife by yourself or with friends, and sell the pelts from the dead animals. Players will experience the thrill of gunfights and battles in both online multiplayer and offline single player. You will meet a host of unique characters and struggle against the harshness of the wildernesses. You will ultimately pick your own path, good or evil through an epic story about the death of the Wild West.

With Red Dead Redemption, like GTA4, you can log into the multiplayer world immediately through the menu and select the mode you wish to play, so it is a very easy system. Like GTA4, you have access to the open world with up to eight buddies. You can raid other players camps or NPC camps (non-player controlled camps, like computer), you can stage impressive bank robberies like in wild west movies! Or you can take over armored stage coaches along the trails. You could just go up to the snowy mountains and do some hunting with your pals or by yourself.

Multiplayer has everything that single player has, it has all the computer controlled characters, just imagine how fun that will be. Whatever you can imagine you can do in the wild west, then you can do it! There are a lot of unlockable features, so certain mounts and weapons are available after you have achieved certain things, like killing so many people. Like for example, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's ranking system. Except this will be in the wild west! oh this will be so fun!!

@Nightblade101 ye atm but just like all the other rockstars game it will? release to PC and they always say: maybe we will release it and here we have it.

They said the samething for GTA4 :P

The game is looking promising to say the least and the fact that Rockstar just might release a Red Dead Redemption PC version, thus making the game accessible to a wider audience, is more great news.
